Seek Week is an opportunity to intentionally remove distractions and disrupt our normal routines to listen more carefully to God’s voice and focus on what He is saying and doing.

When we turn down the volume in our day-to-day lives, it has the supernatural effect of turning up the volume of God’s voice. To start the new year and reorient our hearts toward God, we are calling our church to seeking Him through daily prayer, gathering together, and church-wide fasting. Something powerful takes place when God’s people come together to lift up one voice. Seeking God in this way is for people of every age and stage of life with God. Whether you’re just getting to know Jesus or you’ve known him a long time, God promises that when you seek him with all of your heart you will find him.

As we pursue God and orient our hearts toward Him over this next year, we’ll enter into a week of prayer, daily devotionals in God’s word, an extended prayer and worship night on Wednesday, 1/22, and fasting from Monday, 1/20 to Sunday, 1/26. On Sunday, 1/26, we’ll celebrate baptisms during our 9 and 11am gatherings and then break our fast as a church over a meal together after our 11am service.

Pray & Intercede

There is no wrong way to pray, and prayer doesn’t even require words, but you can try praying through the A.C.T.S model as one way of approaching your prayer time with God.

  • A: ADORATION - Adoration is an act of praise and worship. Adoring the Lord means offering him the affections of your
heart and paying honor to him for his mighty power, wisdom, strength, goodness, mercy and love.

  • C: CONFESSION - In the act of confession you are asking God to remove your old, sinful ways of living. God is faithful and just to forgive sins. Through confession we are made new and more like Jesus. When you repent of a specific area, ask God to transform you into the opposite (i.e. - ask for joy instead of depression).

  • T: THANKSGIVING - Thank God for what he has already done in your life and reflect on the many blessings in your life. Thank him for his faithfulness in keeping promises in your life, those of your family and friends, and the circumstances in your life.

  • S: SUPPLICATION - Ask the Lord to give you the desires of your heart. Align your heart with His will through reading and praying Scripture. Remind God of his promises to you.

You can also pray through God’s Word as you study it. We encourage you to check out the 21-day Bible reading plan below.

Choose a Fast

Although fasting in Scripture is almost always a fasting from food, there are other ways to fast including television, social media, technology, etc. Anything given up temporarily in order to focus all our attention on God can be considered a fast (1 Corinthians 7:1-5).

Fasting should be limited to a set time, especially when fasting from food, because extended periods of time without eating can be harmful to the body and fasting is not intended to punish the flesh or be reduced to a dieting method, but to redirect our attention to God. Some may not be able to fast from food due to a medical condition, but everyone can temporarily give up something in order to draw closer to God.

Here are a few types of fasting to consider:

  • LIQUID FAST: Consuming only liquids for a specific period of time

  • DANIEL FAST – eating only fruits, vegetables, and abstaining from any sort of dessert, treat, animal product, or alcohol

  • PARTIAL FAST – abstain from eating until dinner daily

  • CHOOSE A FAST – abstain from something you would normally give time and energy to instead of God: tv, social media, music, sports, etc.

Read God’s Word

Whether you’re new to reading God’s Word or you’ve been reading it for a long time, the S.O.A.P. method can be a helpful guide to your scripture reading and journaling each day. You will need a Bible, pen & a journal.

  • S: SCRIPTURE
‍Open your Bible to your reading for the day.
Take your time reading and allow God to speak to you.
When you are done, look for a verse that particularly spoke to you that day, and write it in your journal.

  • O: OBSERVATION
‍What do you think God is saying to you in this scripture?
Ask the Holy Spirit to teach you and reveal Jesus to you.

  • A: APPLICATION
‍Personalize what you have read, by asking yourself how it applies to your life currently. Perhaps it's instruction, encouragement, a new promise, or corrections for a particular area of your life. Write how this scripture can apply to you today.

  • P: PRAYER
‍This can be as simple as asking God to help you use this scripture, or even a prayer for a greater insight on what He may be revealing to you. Remember, prayer is a two-way conversation, so be sure to listen to what God has to say! Now, write it out.
